The wizard has lived in the tower for a very long time, he is old and he is weary, and he will not help the boy.
The boy is young and inexperienced, but he learns fast and has obvious potential, he knows that he will strike down the dark lord as predicted in the prophecies of old.
The wizard sets the boy menial jobs, he sends him to gather wood in the forest, and lay another coat of paint on the towers exterior, he makes the boy clean out his stable, sends him on long pointless errands and offers nought but discouragement.
The boy perseveres, and in time begins to see the wisdom in the wizard's tasks, believes that he sees how they make hi
Punishment meted out for a crime must always be greater than the potential gain from committing the offense after adjustment to reflect the probability of getting caught.
The only reason for punishment should be deterrence, if someone can make a logical decision that the gain to be made from committing a crime outweighs the risk then it is pointless to be surprised when someone does.
The point of of disproportionately harsh punishment is not vengeance because vengeance has no place in justice, it is instead to reduce the number of people you have to punish.
It should be kept in mind that you can not take something that someone does not hav
I read my own obituary you know, I don't recommend it, there's nothing like seeing a plain normal life reduced to a paragraph and a half to stoke the ego, and remind you of your significance in the world. If this was a Hollywood movie I'd have gone to my funeral, hung around at the back by a bunch of tree's wearing sunglasses and a big heavy coat, but that sort of thing gets people into trouble even in Hollywood so I had to make do with sad little spot in the local rag.
I suppose for you to understand this I really need to start at the beginning. I should probably start by asking you exactly which brand of conspiracy theory you subscribe to,
People think that the universe hates them, that the whole of creation views them with malignant intent. The truth is even more terrible, the universe does not care for you at all.
You are owed nothing by everything and you owe nothing to it.
Of all the infinite things that exist, the only ones that will ever show more than the briefest, impersonal and academic concern for you are your friends and family.
They are the only pieces of the universe that care.
As such they are your most precious assets and your most valuable currency and should not be lightly squandered.
Anyone who could think of friendship in such terms most likely deserves
Nature is no benign and leafy Earth mother. She does not care for her creations nor does she grieve for their loss, Nature does not begrudge us the damage we cause.
Nature exists only to continue existing without thought of the cost.
Nature is a harsh parent, breeding for the strongest and the fittest and the foulest, she makes all her creations fight to extinction and consigns the losers to the fossil record without a pang of regret.
Nature would see this planet stripped to the bedrock and every living thing upon it dead if her seed could spread to other worlds, and she would do this gladly. If our behavior move her towards this goal then
And the truth shall set you free
- is a lie
The truth does not free us, the truth defines us and it binds us.
The truth holds us to what we are, what we are not, and what we can never be.
True freedom is found in deceit, in the lie we can move beyond the truth
and perhaps slowly forge a happier life out of self delusion.
The truth is a weapon; a man can be destroyed utterly, in but the span of a sentence, by the truth of themselves. It can strip them of everything that they think that they are and everything that they hope to be.
The only defense is to own the truth of yourself, to know it, to utterly accept it, to wrap it around your

This is pretty much a place holder for the more detailed update I need to write if I'm going to start posting stuff here again.
If anyone is interested, I got my PhD, My cousin managed to stay out of jail (and is still an idiot).
My dog is still dead, but I'm sure he has conquered the canine underworld by now, so that's OK.
Social life, is a work in progress, so substantial improvement there :-)
Just passed by on this page and realized that I should probably update this thing, not least because it gives me the opportunity to vent secure in the unique privacy afforded by a vast and anonymous audience who have better things to look at.
So worst year ever -
Just finished (probably) failing my PhD, to be honest I might feel worse about this if I felt that I actually deserved one, on the other hand I might feel better about it if I had met more than one other student who deserved one either. Angry at the University for many things, angry at academia and science in general for a lot more, angry at myself always.
Our dog died. I wish I c
Once upon a time, about a month or so ago, I signed up at a website such that I could look at all the very pretty pictures without clicking twice to bring them up or having poor advertisers wasting their time periodically trying to sell stuff to broke people in the wrong country. I did not at the time really comprehend the potentially dire consequences of that decision. It's only recently that I realised that
A) I now had a webpage that was empty
B) People had visited it and
C) Left comments and stuff despite the fact it was empty
Now careful old chap I thought, this is probably the kind of the thing that could eventually lead to contact
